Boosting IVF Success with Acupuncture: What the Research Says
At Downtown Miami Acupuncture Center, we specialize in fertility acupuncture and are proud to support individuals and couples on their journey to growing their families. One of the most effective and research-supported approaches we offer is acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer during IVF (in vitro fertilization) treatment.
Acupuncture and IVF: The Paulus Study
A landmark study published in Fertility and Sterility by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine in April 2002 demonstrated the potential benefits of acupuncture during IVF. Led by Dr. Wolfgang E. Paulus, this randomized controlled trial explored how acupuncture can impact IVF outcomes.
You can access the full study here.
Study Overview
Participants: 160 women (ages 21–43) undergoing Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), including IVF (n=101) and ICSI (n=59), all with high-quality embryos.
Groups:
Acupuncture group: 80 women received acupuncture 25 minutes before and after embryo transfer.
Control group: 80 women received no acupuncture.
Results
Pregnancy rate in acupuncture group: 42.5% (34 out of 80)
Pregnancy rate in control group: 26.3% (21 out of 80)
These results suggest a significant improvement in clinical pregnancy rates for women who received acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer.
Acupuncture Protocol Used
Before embryo transfer, the following acupuncture points were used:
Ear Acupuncture Points:
Left Ear – Shen Men (Spirit Gate), Uterus (Zhi Gong)
Right Ear – Endocrine (Nei Fen Mi), Subcortex (Nao Dian)
Body Acupuncture Points:
PC6 – Nei Guan (Inner Pass)
SP8 – Di Ji (Earth’s Crux)
LV3 – Tai Chong (Great Surge)
DU20 – Bai Hui (Hundred Meetings)
ST29 – Gui Lai (Return)
After embryo transfer, these points were selected:
Ear Acupuncture Points:
Right Ear – Shen Men, Uterus
Left Ear – Endocrine, Subcortex
Body Acupuncture Points:
ST36 – Zu San Li (Three Leg Miles)
SP6 – San Yin Jiao (Three Yin Intersection)
SP10 – Xue Hai (Sea of Blood)
LI4 – He Gu (Union Valley)
The protocol emphasized relaxing the uterus, invigorating Qi and blood, and calming the spirit—all key aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) fertility care.
How We Integrate This at Downtown Miami Acupuncture
At our clinic, we regularly collaborate with fertility centers across Miami to provide acupuncture treatments on-site during embryo transfers. For patients who prefer, we also offer pre-transfer acupuncture sessions in our office, which many have found helpful in calming the mind and supporting the body before the procedure.
While more research is needed to confirm exactly how acupuncture enhances IVF success, the clinical evidence and patient feedback are promising.
Why This Study Matters
This study stands out for several reasons:
It involved a substantial number of participants.
All acupuncture treatments were performed by the same practitioner, eliminating variability.
It used a standardized protocol based on traditional Chinese medicine principles.
Although a placebo-controlled group was not included—a common challenge in acupuncture research—the findings remain impactful.
Our Commitment to Fertility Support
As acupuncture continues to gain recognition in the fertility world, we hope to see more well-funded research on how it can support reproductive outcomes. Until then, we remain committed to providing evidence-informed, compassionate care to our patients.
Rafael Perez, clinic director, is a Board-Certified Fellow of the Acupuncture and TCM Board of Reproductive Medicine (ABORM.org)—a distinction held by only a select group of fertility acupuncturists in the U.S.
